I’m here to tell you cold calling is the basic foundation for every sales strategy. But it’s not the only part of your sales strategy. What you think is and is not cold calling is likely wrong.
What Cold Calling Is Not
First of all – cold calling isn’t “dialing for dollars”. There’s no cookie-cutter shortcut to cold calling. If all you’re doing is picking up the phone and dialing a number out of the phone book or off a list in the hopes you’ll get lucky and get an easy sale, that’s not cold calling. And of course, you hate it. Who wouldn’t hate doing that? I sure would!
The truth is sales people don’t know how to cold call effectively. Everyone expects to know instinctively how to cold call, like they’re born automatically knowing how. When you were a child and your parents gave you your first bike you were excited, right? When they took the training wheels off, how did you feel? Almost everyone remembers feeling scared the first time they get on a bike without training wheels. But your parents held on, encouraged you, guided you along until suddenly you realize they’re running beside you and you’re doing it all by yourself. To maximize your selling abilities, you need someone to guide and encourage you, to help you develop the skills and before you know it, you’ll be flying solo. And not only will it be the most fun and coolest thing you’ve ever done, but it’ll be a skill you use for life!
